Start with segregation at source

The single biggest win is separating recyclables where they're produced. Clear, well-labelled bins for mixed recycling, paper and card, food and general waste dramatically improve the quality of what can be recovered — and reduce contamination that sends recycling to disposal.

Know your main streams

• Paper & cardboard — often your highest-volume stream; keep it dry and flat.
• Mixed recycling — plastics, cans and glass, depending on your collection.
• Food waste — increasingly required, and better diverted to anaerobic digestion.
• WEEE — electrical items must be recycled separately under WEEE regulations.

Measure and report
